Medieval and Renaissance Instrument

Born in England in 1642, Isaac Newton's early years were haunted by the English Civil War, the Great Plague, and the Fire of London. The Restoration, however, overturned England's medieval outlook, and historian Peter Aughton sets Newton's life and work against the backdrop of this auspicious era of intellectual rebirth. Among Newton's friends were the colorful diarist Samuel Pepys, astronomer Edmund Halley, and Christopher Wren, the greatest architect of his age. Together, they were instrumental in the founding of the Royal Society, an academy intent on examining nothing less than the entire field of scientific knowledge. In Newton's Apple, Aughton brings to life the world that surrounded Newton and made possible his remarkable and lasting discoveries.

This handbook, an entirely new work, is not simply another guide to the performance of music of the past; it is, rather, a book about the study of past performance. Each main section - Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century - contains an introduction dealing with contexts of performance as well as sources and theory. This is followed by detailed discussions of vocal and instrumental performance.

Italian Renaissance - The Italian Renaissance began the opening phase of the Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement from the end of the 14th century to about 1600. Although its origins trace back to the earlier part of the 14th century, many aspects of Italian culture were largely Medieval and the Renaissance did not come into full swing until the end of the century.
